ABOUT
Origin of the Icon
The history of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God begins in 1579 in the city of Kazan. After a great fire that destroyed much of the city, the Blessed Virgin appeared several times in a dream to a nine‑year‑old girl named Matrona, revealing the place where an icon was hidden beneath the ashes of a burned‑down house.
After much pleading, the adults finally listened to the child’s words and began to dig at the indicated spot. There they discovered the icon, wrapped in cloth and untouched by the flames — as if freshly painted. The people saw this event as a great miracle.
Miracles and Veneration
Soon after the discovery, numerous healings were reported, including the restoration of sight to the blind. The icon was solemnly moved to a church, and a convent for women was later built on the site where it was found.
The Kazan Icon became one of the most venerated sacred images of the Orthodox world. Believers have long prayed before it in times of war, epidemics, and hardship, seeking the intercession of the Holy Mother of God for protection, mercy, and peace for their people and homeland.
