The Image of the Holy Mandylion (The Savior Not Made by Hands) is one of the most venerated depictions of Jesus Christ, which, according to Church tradition, appeared miraculously without human involvement.

History of the image
During the earthly life of Jesus Christ, the ruler of the city of Edessa, King Abgar V, who suffered from leprosy, sent his servant and painter Ananias to ask Jesus for healing and to paint His portrait.

However, the artist was unable to capture the Savior’s face because of the radiant light that shone from Him. Then Jesus washed His face and wiped it with a linen cloth (called an ubrus), on which His image was miraculously imprinted. Upon receiving this sacred cloth, King Abgar was healed.
