Symbolism of the icon of Saint John of Shanghai
-
Monastic garments
On the saint’s shoulders is a violet mantle with skrizhali (decorative tablets), the “robe of salvation”. It symbolizes God’s protecting power and the faithful keeping of the monastic vows. The black head covering (klobuk) with a cross represents Christ’s crown of thorns, the “garment of humility” and the “helmet of salvation”. -
Streams (stripes)
The red and white stripes on the mantle symbolize the streams of divine wisdom, “Blood and water” — the Mysteries of the Eucharist and Baptism. -
Riasa
The long black garment with wide sleeves and a tight collar is a symbol of renunciation of the world, mourning and repentance. -
Panagia
A small icon of the Mother of God adorned with stones, worn by a bishop on the chest together with a cross. -
Gesture of blessing
The blessing right hand signifies blessing in the name of the Lord. -
Staff
A symbol of pastoral authority and care for the flock. On icons it often has the shape of the Greek letter tau, a sign of resurrection and life. -
Churches on both sides
They symbolize the saint’s involvement in their construction: on the right, the Cathedral of the Mother of God “Intercessor for Sinners” in Shanghai; on the left, the church dedicated to the icon of the Mother of God “Joy of All Who Sorrow”, where his relics are now kept.
